10 FREE Ways to Save Money Around Home

If you are trying to improve your finances but don't know where to start, just take a look at this list. Here are 10 ways to cut down and save money. Each individual item might not save you a ton but if added up it can really free up some cash.

1. Line dry your laundry. This is probably the easiest thing to do. During summer run a piece of string from one point to another and let the sun do its magic. This can even be done during winter by running a line inside your home, preferably by a big window facing south or above a heating element (e.g. baseboard or radiator).

TIP: Once you get used to line drying why not sell that dryer?

2. Wash laundry in cold water. Pretty self explanatory.

3. Turn of water when brushing teeth, shaving, etc. Its amazing how many people don't do this.

4. Turn off unused electronics. Vampire power is a big issue. All those electronics that are "off" really aren't off but in standby. When a TV is turned off it is still drawing a small amount of electricity to power the IR port. That's what allows you to turn in the TV using a remote. Same goes for cell phone chargers and just about every other electronic gadget. The best way to stop this vampire is by turning everything off at night. Better yet use a power strip to make it easier.
TIP: Instead of going and remembering to turn everything off in the house, use a "Smart Strip" to turn everything off automatically.

5. Set your thermostat higher during summer and lower during winter.  If its cold put a sweater on, if its hot take it off.  A few degrees doesn't make a big difference.

TIP:  Use a programmable thermostat to automate savings.

6. During summer open windows. But not any windows, open the ones that the sun isn't directly shining on. Also try to create a small draft to move the air inside.

7. Turn off lights that aren't being used. Similarly to turning off the water while brushing your teeth. Its amazing how many people don't actually do this. If its not being used turn it off!  This also extends to porch lights and flood lights. If you are not outside the porch light doesn't need to be on. As an added note the FBI and Chicago police conducted an experiment where part of the city's lights were turned off and residents were told to do the same with any flood/porch lights. The result was an 18% drop in crime. Not to mention the added benefits of reducing light pollution (Yes it really exists!) and saving money. So turn off those lights!

8. Use rainwater. Set up a barrel or bucket at every place the gutter drains. My grandfather does this and uses the collected water to maintain his garden. Though it is possible to use the water in other ways too. Just remember that this is a free source of water.

9. Negotiate your bills. Now here is something different.  Make a pile of all your bills and utilities then look for things you don't use or need. Do you have 1000 channels but only watch 5?  Think about getting basic cable or cutting the cord completely.  Don't use a land line? Get rid of it. Anything that you do need or use just look for special promotions or just haggle.

TIP:  Use an old school antenna or stream content with Netflix or a similar service.

10. Clean your appliances and electronics. Keep the back of the fridge clean especially the coils. By letting dust accumulate the coils become less efficient and the fridge uses more power. Same goes for computers, TV's even cars. Keeping the TV dust free will insure it stays cool and will not break prematurely. Cars are affected in a similar way, open the hood and clear any leaves in between the radiator. Keeping a car dirt free will also improve MPG a bit because of the reduced drag. Doing this a few times a year can really save some money.

Why the Rich are Rich and Poor are Poor

Ever wonder why rich people are rich and poor people are poor?  It all has to do with their mindset! Here are 17 differences between the rich and poor's mindset.
  1. Rich people believe: “I create my life.” Poor people believe: “Life happens to me.”                                 - Rich people don't blame others for their mistakes.  The only reason why that idea didn't work was because of me not the economy. Poor people blame their troubles on the economy or their boss.
  2. Rich people play the money game to win. Poor people play the money game to not lose.                       - the rich take more risk so they get more reward.  Poor people look for security and are reluctant to make big risks so their reward is not as great
  3. Rich people are committed to being rich. Poor people want to be rich.                                                  - Rich people take the necessary actions to become rich and stay rich.  The poor only dream about rich but do nothing about it or give up to easily.
